There’s the old adage that healthy eating is only one half of the weight loss puzzle.
The other half is exercise.
So, dear reader, this evening, I did my first LIIT (Low-Intensity Interval Training) session. There’s a sentence I never thought I’d write.
But having a long chat at the weekend about motivation, I got back from the dog walk earlier this evening, and figured, it’s a new week, and it’s time to do something about my fitness levels. I jumped on the fact I seemed to be up for a home workout (now Jack’s back at work), changed into some shorts, and pressed play.
Now, I know many of my friends are very much in the fitness / running / gym camp, and honestly, bravo. My issue with either being at the gym, or worse, running, is that I get so bored. Like, what am I meant to do with my brain in that time? It feels like such a waste. And then that boredom manifests itself into either apathy or irritation… neither of which are great for keeping you motivated.
So I figured I’d give HIIT ago. Except I’m way too out of shape, so, we’re starting small. LIIT.
Not only that, but I used a workout video from the nation’s PE teacher Joe Wicks (who actually had been recommended to me by someone who got in contact about my post from last week!).
Slight issue is that I’ve always found his voice / presence / style a little grating. But y’know what? I take it back. When he’s not shouting ‘LEAN IN FIFTEEN’ at you, he’s a surprisingly effective, and motivational, instructor.
This post is full of sentences I never thought I’d type.
But I gotta say, I’m so glad I did it. The nice thing about doing a set of exercises for 30 seconds, and then getting 30 seconds off? Variety. That’s more like it. With regular breaks, the other bonus was of course that I do it in my living room without having the indignity of being seen / seeable in public!
My word though, I am sore this evening. The squats!! My thighs!!
But I had another successful eating day today, and combined with a sweaty ol’ workout? Who knows, maybe this transformation might just be possible.
And I know that a lot of people always say ‘if even I can do it, so can you!’, but, it’s true. I’m about as far from fit as it’s possible to be right now, save for the dog walking. And I managed it! The other nice thing, too, from a motivation point of view, is the chance to do it with a friend.
Sophie and I chatted at the weekend about motivating one another, and having dropped her a message, we both have a level of accountability to one another, with the knowledge that it’s very much not you doing it alone.

Essentially, I’m feeling really positive and pumped, and I wanted to write it down before I seize up tomorrow and curse myself for ever even thinking about doing it in the first place.
